Q&A with Trainer Scott Takenaga
Here is a quick excerpt from my Q&A with CrossFit Seattle Director of Training, Scott Takenaga. Scott is the first trainer profiled in a series of Trainer Spotlight posts.
Many of you know him as the 'Professor'. I like to think of him as Yoda...not the chicken shit that fled just when the Rebellion needed him, but the pocket bad-ass that saved the universe.
During my own Jedi training I shadowed Scott quite a bit and was amazed how he could make the most complicated movements seem simple. He is a Jedi master. If you get a chance, pick his brain...
Favorite lift:
"The Squat" or back squat for anyone that hasn't taken Rippetoe's barbell cert. Why? It's the only exercise that still gives me those pre-workout butterflies. The kind I used to get when I first started CrossFit. A missed deadlift stays on the floor, nothing scary about that. On the other hand, a missed squat is so much more unpredictable. Just the other day, I felt my heart start to race right before a PR attempt. Excitement like that doesn't happen everyday.
Favorite resource:
I don't really have a favorite, but I will frequently peruse websites such as: eliteFTS, Cressy Performance, Catalyst Athletics, T-Nation, Robb Wolf and Robertson Training Systems. I'll read anything. Who knows where you'll find your next bit of invaluable wisdom.
Favorite quote:
Mine? "Suck Less"
Written by another:
"A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both." -- François-René de Chateaubriand
Something you don't know:
I remember career day, or something like that, in the 7th grade. I had to take this long questionnaire that would foretell ideal career paths. This was serious stuff and not to be taken lightly. Well that stupid test said I would be a great PE teacher or forest ranger. "Ha! Those tests are dumb and these people are crazy." But what does a 12 year old know.
